History -
The Burns Tartan, also known as the Robert Burns Check, was created in 1959 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Scottish poet Robert Burns.
The tartan is a tribute to Burns' life and work, and is a symbol of the poet's lasting impact on Scottish culture
The tartan was originally intended to be based on the Campbell clan tartan, but was ultimately modelled on the black and white Shepherd's Check.
The Burns Tartan includes brown to honour the "hodden grey" cloth mentioned in Burns' poem "A Man's A Man", and green to represent the surrounding hillsides.
